As a husband and a father it seems like Christmas and New Years are one of the most expensive times in the year. Gifts have to be bought for both children and wife. I am almost always scared to ask my wife what I should gift her, because I know the she would have some very expensive ideas. I generally like to surprise her, which allows me to buy a cheaper gift. Anyways, this year was bound to be different, my wife had been waiting for iphone 5 and had already told me that she wanted it for Christmas.

I was really excited to know that iphone 5 would not be out till mid 2012, but my excitement was short lived as Apple announced iphone 4s. Unfortunately my wife cancelled her plans for iphone 5 and was ready to be content with iphone 4s. As we brought home the phone, we found the phone better than iphone 4. In fact the additional features put it in direct competition with the Samsung Galaxy S2.

The company I work for provides data cleansing services and even though I am not a part of the tech team, I have learnt quite a bit about the gadgets. My wife on the other hand is well versed with these things. I know this is not how normal homes are like, but I am getting there. My favorite upgrade in this phone is the camera, which is now 8MP and has an improved aperture ratio. Apart from that the CPU is dual core A5 and the power of graphical processing has been increased 7 times. The voice recognition service is also impressive and only time will tell if we will get used to using it. Who knows, may be at some point in time we might even use it nearly as much as we use the call button.

Video editing can make a great video. Here are a few tips to help enhance your Final Cut Pro video editing.

1. If you have limited display space, use Digital Cinema Preview. Access this by verifying that VIEW à EXTERNAL FRAMES à ALL FRAMES is selected. Then under the VIEW menu, click VIDEO PLAYBACK, and select DIGITAL CINEMA DESKTOP PREVIEW – MAIN. This will display your canvas full screen.

2. Be aware of how you use dissolves and transitions. As slick as transition effects can be, too many can ruin and distract from a video. Use these sparingly so that the effect is maximized when you do use them.

3. Use camera moves (like pulling back and zooming in) by loading a clip into the VIEWER. In the MOTION tab, select BASIC MOTION, and add a keyframe at the start and end of the clip. Adjust the scale to achieve the camera move you want.

4. Freeze frames may sometimes be required in post-production, and they’re easy to pull from Final Cut Pro. In the Viewer, put the playhead at the frame you want to capture. Go to the MODIFY menu and select MAKE FREEZE FRAME.

5. Use Batch Export when you have lots of videos to export. Do this by highlighting all clips in your BROWSER, then right-click and select BATCH EXPORT. Another window will appear. Select SETTINGS, adjust to your specifications, and click EXPORT.

Droid Bionic vs iPhone 4

So my friend was telling me about being interested in used cars in Lebanon and was doing some research online to find out what was available. He then told me came across some reviews on the Droid Bionic and the iPhone. So he did a comparison. Here is what he came up with.

Droid Bionic is going to be a great addition to the Android cellphones but is it better than the ever popular iPhone 4.

Let’s take a look at the screen size. The Droid comes with a big 4.3” inch screen while iPhone comes with only 3.5” inch screen. But, the iPhone offers a great resolution of 640×960 pixels while Droid is packed with 540×960 resolution.

The Droid Bionic comes with the latest 1GHz ARM Dual Core Cortex-A9 processor with Tegra-2 chipset. But iPhone comes with a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor. So, the Droid Bionic is the winner here.

The Bionic is packed with a great 8MP camera with dual-LED flash and autofocus while the iPhone 4 comes with 5M P camera with single LED flash. But the iPhone 4 weighs less than the Bionic.

There is no option to increasing the memory of iPhone 4 as it doesn’t contain any memory card slot. But you can expand the memory of the Droid Bionic as it comes with a memory card slot. The Droid Bionic offers Android and the iPhone 4 is packed with iOS 4.

There are more than 3,50,000 apps available for iOS 4 while Android offers about 250,000 apps. But no iDevice supports flash and the Droid Bionic is capable of showing Adobe Flash 10.1 contents.

Mini everything

I’m going to take a slight detour from discussing tiny technology, smartphones and carte r4i to talk about something else that is small and has always been close to my heart. No, not my Westie pup (though he is small and very important to me) but my beloved Mini.
Even when I was a kid I always wanted to drive a Mini when I was older. Not much of a motoring ambition, is it? While my mates would roar around the playground pretending they were Porsches or Ferraris or even Superbikes, I would be dreaming of a cute little Mini to get me from A to B. Naturally I kept this kind of thing quiet; I even had a motoring magazine feature on the (at the time) new Mini that I kept stuffed under my bed in shame – not the usual kind of reading material that teenage boys keep down there…
So as soon as I was old enough (and wealthy enough) to buy my own car, it was inevitable that I would plump for a Mini. Highly inappropriate when you consider that the wee boy I used to be became the six foot tall man I am today! I’m sure I can hear strangers giggling when I unlock the door and fold myself in or out of the driving seat. Once I’m squeezed in though, Sheila is strangely comfortable. Yes; my Mini is called Sheila. I bought her from an Australian and she is even painted in a glorious shade of green that reminds me of the “away” strip that the Aussie cricket team where, so it was either Sheila or Matilda, and she didn’t feel like a Matilda…
Of course, being a bit of a techno geek, Sheila is fitted out with all the best gadgets; iPod interface, somewhere to charge up my phones and games consoles, my mate even put the wiring in the roof so that I could have a little TV in the back seat if I wanted. Problem is any passengers would be pushed so close to the screen, they’d probably end up suing me for damaging their eyesight! Guess I’m going to need a bigger car if I want all that fancy kit.
